About Ethan Furniture

Born in 1932 from a humble housewares agency, Ethan Allen was founded by Nat Ancell and Ted Baumritter—two dreamers who transformed a bankrupt Vermont sawmill into a legacy of American-made furnishings. By 1939, they introduced a 28-piece colonial-style furniture line named for Vermont hero Ethan Allen, laying the foundation for a brand that would shape generations of home design.

From pioneering open-stock furniture collections to presenting a handcrafted maple chest to President Eisenhower, Ethan Allen has long blended tradition with innovation. In 1969, we officially adopted the Ethan Allen name and shifted to direct consumer engagement, creating a recognizable brand and signature showroom experience.
