About City Gallery

Founded in 2003 by a dedicated collective of nine artists, City Gallery is a vibrant, artist-run gallery located on State Street in New Haven, Connecticut. We specialize in monthly exhibitions showcasing contemporary painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and fiber arts—featuring solo and small group shows that reflect the diverse voices of our community.

City Gallery was established as a cooperative with a shared commitment to showcasing professional, innovative art. Our founding members, including Janet Van Horne, Caroline Chandler, Pamela Dear, and others, transformed a modest space into a dynamic exhibition venue, where artists take turns leading and curating the gallery’s operations.

With fewer than twenty members, our structure ensures that each artist has meaningful opportunities to present work throughout the year. We celebrate New Haven’s long-standing October arts festival by hosting an annual group exhibition featuring all our members.

At the heart of our mission is a passion for creative exchange among artists and with the public. We aim to enrich the Greater New Haven arts scene as a regional hub for contemporary expression, welcoming artists from varied backgrounds, cultures, and generations.

Over the years, our gallery has grown in both size and spirit, yet our core vision remains unchanged: to provide a space where fresh ideas, artistic experimentation, and thoughtful collaboration flourish.
